GAME CHANGER
The Power of the Awkward Pause
Learn to become comfortable with the awkward pause. One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is this:
The moment silence hits the conversation, they feel pressure to fill it.
· They jump in.
· They explain.
· They ask another question too quickly.
· They start fixing.
· They start rescuing.
And without realizing it, they interrupt the very moment where awareness is trying to emerge.
Here’s the truth:
Silence is not empty.
Silence is often where breakthrough begins.
The awkward pause is not a problem.
· It is a tool.
· It is space.
It is room for the client to think, feel, process, and hear what is really going on beneath the surface.
Too many coaches confuse activity with progress.
But in coaching, the fastest way forward is often to slow down enough for truth to rise.
Sometimes the client has spent their entire life talking fast, moving fast, reacting fast.
The pause forces them to actually sit with what they just said. And often, what comes after the silence is the real issue.
· Not the first answer.
· The deeper answer.
· The honest answer.
· The ownership answer.
That’s where transformation happens. So when the silence comes, do not panic. Do not rush to rescue.
Do not assume you need to save the moment.
Let the pause do its work. Sometimes five seconds feels like thirty. That’s okay.
The discomfort is usually in the coach more than the client.
Ask yourself:
Am I facilitating awareness, or am I relieving my own discomfort?
That question changes everything.
Because when coaches move too fast, they often take ownership away from the client.
But when you allow the pause, the client begins to process for themselves.
They begin to hear themselves. They begin to discover.
And discovered truth always goes deeper than delivered advice.
· So embrace the awkward pause.
· Let it breathe.
· Let it work.
Because sometimes the silence is where the Holy Spirit, insight, and self-awareness all meet.
And that awkward pause may be the very thing that changes the conversation.
Don’t rush the silence—breakthrough often speaks second.
